Domain Technology : How It Works |
Time Domain technology works completely differently
from traditional audio systems. It reveals all the sounds recorded
at the source, and it conveys them exactly as they were recorded to
deliver a pristine and complete audio experience.
When you play music on your TimeDomain system, even
music that you've listened to hundreds of times on your conventional
system, it will be like hearing it for the first time. Because you're
hearing the music as it was actually committed to the recording medium,
without any corruption of audio integrity.
Traditional Audio Vs.
TimeDomain Audio
-
Your conventional speaker is
made of a rectangular box, woofer, squawker, tweeter, some
insulation and a dividing network that separates the output into
low, mid, and high range sound.
-
With this kind of system, it's
impossible to reproduce the original sound perfectly because inside
the speaker box, the air is full of "dirty sound" –
standing sound waves, diffracted sound, and reflected sound that
can escape through the speaker diaphragm itself, blending with and
corrupting the music.
-
Even if you listen to a high-end
audio system, what you're actually hearing is a medley of noises
made by the amps, equalizers and the speakers themselves... not
the pure, unadulterated source of the music.
-
Sounds crumble and nuances get
lost within traditional audio systems. The dynamic range shrinks
while the volume of the sound dwindles. Fine musical tones become
inaudible, resulting in what we call the "entropy of fidelity."
-
Preventing sounds from crumbling
and vanishing is the goal we set for ourselves when we created TimeDomain
speakers.
-
TimeDomain audio extracts 100
percent of the sound on the CD, DVD, or other medium as
it was originally recorded.
-
Playing high quality recordings
on our TimeDomain speakers will deliver a true sound image that
allows you to hear not only the tone of each individual instrument
and voice, but you can also sense where the performers are positioned
in relation to each other, you can hear their breathing and the
acoustics of the surrounding atmosphere such as the concert hall
or recording studio.
-
For this reason, TimeDomain is
the closest you can get to live music.
-
Speaker Construction
-
The TimeDomain Yoshii 9 speakers
have an unusual shape for a very good reason. The single-piece aluminum
cylinder suppresses unwanted vibrations so that only the purest
of sounds are emitted.
-
Inside the tube is the speaker
itself, not bolted in but set face up at the top and buffered by
a gel material. A heavy plumb bob is suspended from the speaker
inside the tube, again to minimize vibrations.
-
The Yoshii 9's speaker units
are set facing upwards so sound doesn't have directionality. In
standard speakers, the sounds come from the front of the box. If
you move to the sides or behind the speaker, the sound changes and
deteriorates.
-
Not so with the Yoshii 9. The
tube construction sends the sound upwards where it spreads throughout
the room, allowing you to experience music similar to the acoustics
of a concert hall.
-
Meanwhile, sound waves emanating
from the back of the speaker will flow downwards and be released
through the bottom of the pipe without affecting the quality of
the frontal sounds. What comes out of the front of the speaker is
pure, crystalline sound.
-
For Audiophiles
-
To express Time Domain theory
in more technical terms, the main priority of conventional speakers
is to improve the amplitude-frequency characteristics, which does
not result in any real enhancement of the phase-frequency characteristics.
-
But Time Domain theory reproduces
the original audio waveform, which contains the amplitude / phase
frequency characteristics, and emits the original waveform through
the speaker unchanged. That's why Time Domain theory is considered
an effective way to attain truly original sound reproduction.
-
So if you use our speaker system
to listen to a sound source that was recorded under less than ideal
conditions, those unpleasant sounds will be conveyed as accurately
as the desirable sounds.
-
On the other hand, sound sources
that have been recorded under optimal conditions deliver a true
sound image, which allows you to hear everything on the recording
perfectly.
-
Looking Ahead
-
We believe that with the wider
recognition of Time Domain theory and an increasing demand for excellent
audio, recording technologies themselves will undergo some dramatic
changes in the years ahead so that the sound recordings produced
by the music industry will be equal to the quality delivered by
TimeDomain speakers.
-
Our TimeDomain products are on
the leading edge of that movement.
